Arsenal have completed the signing of Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for a fee of €60 million, marking their first major move of the summer transfer window. The 25-year-old deep-lying playmaker joins the Gunners on a long-term deal, adding quality and depth to Mikel Arteta’s midfield ahead of a pivotal 2025/26 campaign.
Zubimendi has been a long-term target for Arteta, who views the Spaniard as a key piece in his tactical puzzle. The former La Real captain has earned widespread praise in La Liga over the past few seasons for his composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and ability to dictate tempo from the base of midfield. His arrival signals Arsenal’s intent to compete at the highest level both domestically and in Europe.
The €60 million fee matches the release clause in Zubimendi’s contract, and Arsenal wasted no time activating it once personal terms were agreed. The player was also reportedly on the radar of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but Arsenal's project and Arteta’s Spanish connection proved decisive in swaying the midfielder’s decision.
Speaking to the club’s media after the announcement, Zubimendi expressed his excitement:
"Arsenal is a massive club with a clear vision and ambition. I’ve admired the way they play under Mikel and I’m excited to be part of this team. I want to contribute and grow with this group of players."
Mikel Arteta was equally enthusiastic about his new signing:
"Martín is a player with exceptional qualities. He understands the game at a deep level and fits the style we are building here at Arsenal. His leadership, character, and experience in top-level football will be vital for us moving forward."
Zubimendi is expected to slot into the holding midfield role, offering more control and technical assurance in possession compared to some of Arsenal’s existing options. His arrival may also allow Declan Rice to be deployed further forward more regularly, enhancing the team’s balance and attacking transitions.
The move could also spark changes in the squad, with Thomas Partey and Jorginho both entering the final years of their contracts. While no outgoing deals have been confirmed, Zubimendi’s arrival adds pressure on midfield places and may prompt departures in the coming weeks.
Zubimendi’s move to Arsenal comes after another strong season with Real Sociedad, where he made 43 appearances across all competitions, helping them secure European qualification once again. Known for his calmness under pressure and tactical discipline, he has been a key figure under Imanol Alguacil and has now earned a step up to the Premier League.
The deal represents a significant investment and a statement of intent from Arsenal’s board, who remain determined to support Arteta’s quest to return the club to title-winning ways. With the club back in the UEFA Champions League and continuing to build a young, dynamic squad, the signing of Zubimendi could prove to be a crucial addition.
Arsenal fans will now be watching closely to see who else joins Zubimendi in North London this summer, as the Gunners aim to take the next step in their evolution under Arteta.
